Amcor Environmental Sustainability Award

At the 30th Anniversary Young Achievement Australia (YAA) National Awards Dinner in Sydney, Cyanide, a group of seventeen North Shore High School students were awarded the Amcor Environmental Sustainability Award for their commitment to being "Green" by growing and selling drought resistant native plants and grasses. The students were participating in YAA's Business Skills Program.

Cyanide set a goal of operating as an environmentally sustainable company and chose to sell Kangaroo Grasses and Dwarf Century Plants. Their slogan was "Pot Plants Against Climate Change".

The Kangaroo Grasses are C4 plants, meaning they have a higher carbon dioxide retention rate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while the Dwarf Century Plants are drought-resistant to enable savings in precious water resources.

The products were packaged in biodegradable pots that could be disposed of by being buried in the ground and biodegrade within six months.

Cyanide also produced a pamphlet to accompany sales, promoting environmental sustainability and educating customers about global warming and suggesting simple yet effective methods to reduce carbon emissions.

To add credibility to the company and products, Cyanide consulted with the CSIRO and NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change to guide their product development and gain further information to support the environmental efficacy of their products.

"Cyanide successfully demonstrated sustainable principles to their business planning, operations and marketing. These students are fine examples of the growing desire of young Australians striving to make a positive difference through product choice and consumer education," said David Brookes, General Manager Corporate Affairs Amcor Australasia.

Amcor has been supporting YAA over the last five years as part of the company's community engagement program, teamcor™. "Our partnership with YAA aligns with the three priority areas of teamcor™ - environmental sustainability, community education and youth development," Mr Brookes said
