Swiss Re Secondary Business Person of the Year Eve Lonie from Tully State High School wins Swiss Re Secondary Business Person of the Year Award. This is the second time in 4 years that a student from Tully State High School in Far North Queensland has one this award at National level. At the 30th Anniversary Young Achievement Australia (YAA) National Awards Event held at the Westin Sydney on November 28 2007, Eve Lonie, the Public Relations Manager of student company Yarnique was awarded the Swiss Re Secondary Business Person of the Year Award. The Swiss Re Secondary Business Person of the Year Award recognises an individual rather than a company. This person is seen to have a wide-ranging and comprehensive understanding of the nature, scope and demands of small business. Eve, a year ten student at Tully High School in Far North Queensland was an integral member of Yarnique, a 22 member YAA Business Skills Program company producing unique gift cards using recycled local North Queensland plant fibres including sugar cane, banana, cotton, wild ginger and kenaf. "The judges concured Eve stood out during the panel interviews and demonstrated a sound knowledge of what is required to run a successful small business. She was a very confident young lady whose ability to articulate her experiences from the program was far beyond her years," said Kerry Baxter, Director of Human Resources, Swiss Re. "The YAA Business Skills Program has given me the opportunity to develop my personal attributes and gain new skills and knowledge," said Eve Lonie.. "Throughout the 24 weeks I have built strong working relationships with my peers, stepped outside my comfort zone whilst presenting my ideas to my group as well as the mentors, media and local community groups who we have liaised with in an effort to garner greater local support" she added. |
