NSW Business Chamber Special Performance Award

At the 30th Anniversary Young Achievement Australia National Awards Dinner in Sydney, Nukanya, a group of adult re-entry students from Para West Adult Campus, South Australia were awarded the NSW Business Chamber Special Performance Award after successfully setting up and running a small business for 24 weeks selling high quality, hand-made beaded jewellery and giftware.

Nukanya is one of more than 250 student companies across Australia taking part in the Business Skills Program which provides hands on business learning to young people.

Nukanya were chosen as the winner of the NSW Business Chamber Special Performance Award because of their ability to overcome extreme hardships both within and outside of their Young Achievement Australia experience.

The company came from a low socio-economic background and throughout the course of the 24 weeks had to continually re-structure their group due to individuals leaving and coming back to the program.

The group grew in confidence throughout the term of the program and became visible at events. Despite starting the program late they successfully returned a profit to their shareholders.

"Nukanya are deserving of this Award. They aspired to achieve and developed their own personal skills through this rewarding experience" explained, Roger Hood, Director, NSW Business Chamber.
