ANNUAL WA TRADE EXPO
On Sunday, 31 August dozens of students descended upon King's Square in Fremantle for the Annual Trade Expo. Students were met with the vibrant buzz of the city and empty marquees which were soon to be transformed into displays of colour and visual displays of months of planning and hard work!

The first event of the day saw the Mayor of Fremantle, Peter Tagliaferri met with students who were more than happy to give a demonstration of their products and services. Mayor Tagliaferri then went on to officially launch the Expo at 12 noon which marked the beginning of sales for all companies.

There was an outstanding range of products on display from enviro-bags, t-shirts, stationary, soaps and candles, jewellery, cheeseboards, dog tags and henna tattoos. This wide range of products drew customers from all over Fremantle and Perth, significantly boosting the market atmosphere.

After settling down into some serious selling, the first skit commenced with entertaining presentations following every 10 minutes. Across the afternoon, there were some very interesting and amusing skits, ranging from Indian and modern styled dancing to chefs attempting to impress Green Peace leaders, songs written especially for the Expo and amusing one liners... all in the name of advertising!

It was noted by many that the vibe of the event was outstanding and that all companies were making excellent contributions with spruikers, music, signage and fun promotions. After several hours of selling, it was time to wrap up and head home.

At 4.00 pm, it was with great pleasure that Professor Robert Harvey, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law at ECU, were able to present the following awards to these companies:

Overall Trade Expo Award: KreYAtions

Gilmore College

Marketing Award: Mind YA Business

John XXIII College

Merchandising Award: Junk Yard

Perth College

Product Knowledge & Sales Process: YAcycled

Wesley College

Skit Award: KreYAtions

Gilmore College

It was very pleasing to see all schools giving the Expo maximum effort and making the day a great success. We were even fortunate enough to have the weather hold out for us, despite the forecast of strong winds and rain.

Joey, Jessica and Matthew would like to congratulate all companies for their outstanding efforts.

Business Skills Management Seminar A Great Success!

The Business Skills Management Seminar was held on Sunday, 15 June and was hosted by the Faculty of Business and Law, ECU. The day was a great success with over 50 students attending.

The day began with a welcome from Michelle Noble; the Manager of the Faculty of Business and Law. Managing Director, Bright Qi then gave a presentation on E-Commerce and the issues he faced when setting up his own business; WebWebWin.

Following Bright's presentation, Trish Rechichi then spoke about the best ways to connect with retailers. In her role as Manager of Sales, Development and Retailer Relationships for Lotterywest, she was able to provide students with invaluable tips on building relationships with people students will come across throughout the course of the program.

As one of the most important aspects to any business, regardless of size, management skills are something all YAA participants should work on. Jenny Devine from the School of Management, ECU, was able to provide advice in an interesting session on "Managing Your Business--The Big Picture".

The first half of the day's proceedings was finished with a group exercise hosted by Kerry McGregor; Lecturer, Business Edge. In this session, small groups were required to make origami water bombs. This exercise was a fun team building activity and it was clear that all students had a great time participating. This activity gave students the opportunity to work in a team under time constraints while practicing interpersonal communication skills while engaging in self-reflection and assessment of their contributions to the activity.

We then had a much welcomed morning tea break where students were given the opportunity to boost their blood sugar levels while network with students from other companies and presenters.

The second half of the day was `kicked off' with workshops for the varying departments within student companies. The presenters of the workshops included Tom Bartlett, Business Person of the Year 2007 as well as Russell Gregory; a geologist and keen environmentalist.

The day then ended with a presentation from Chris Owers, giving information on the FedEx International Trade Challenge. FedEx offers Young Achievement students the opportunity to enter a global competition in product design and marketing. We encourage all students to have a look at www.yaa.org.au for more information on this great competition.

Damian then spoke about Ignite Young Leaders -- a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting ethical leadership. It was great to see the number of students signing up for more information on this outstanding association.

The day was a great success with many students saying the day was "highly beneficial"!
